Entrepreneur Jared Isaacman has been voted in as the new administrator of NASA, ending an unusual nomination process where the President put his name forward, pulled the nomination, and then put him forward again.

Isaacman, an aviation enthusiast who was the first civilian to undertake a extravehicular activity, is also the first NASA administrator in a generation to come straight from outside government.

For numerous observers, the success of his leadership will be determined by one key benchmark: if NASA can send astronauts to the Moon before China.

The administration has made clear a goal for the America to build a permanent lunar base, both to facilitate mining operations and to act as a staging point for missions to the Red Planet.

Confirmation Vote and Nomination Drama

On This week, the U.S. Senate cleared the nomination with a decisive vote.

Trump first withdrew Isaacman's nomination in the spring, citing a "thorough review of prior associations".

At the time, the president was openly clashing with the SpaceX CEO, one of his biggest supporters, with whom Isaacman has a working relationship.

The new administrator says he is now fully behind the presidential objective to harvest the moon, putting him at odds with Musk, who has said that going to the Moon is a detour from the goal of travelling to Mars.

Future Direction

In the ongoing global space race, world powers are racing to tap into the moon's resources.

“Now is not the time for inaction but a time for progress because if we lag, if we err, we may not recover, and the consequences could alter the balance of power here on our planet,” he told US Senators recently.

The private sector veteran sees introducing more industry players as essential for achieving those targets, according to a recently disclosed document detailing his plan for the agency.

In his Senate hearing, he stood by the strategy, which he crafted when he was initially selected, but noted it was a developing document.

His openness to rivalry could also cause friction with Musk. Recently, he applauded the issuance of a major contract to Jeff Bezos's company, which is one of the primary competitors of SpaceX.

In the leaked plan, he proposed NASA should expand collaboration with the scientific community, envisioning the agency as a "catalyst for research".

He pointed to the scheduled deployment of the Roman Telescope as a flagship example.

"Should we be on the verge of something extraordinary - like deploying the Roman Telescope - I will explore every option to make it happen, even funding it myself if that's what it takes to achieve the discoveries," he stated.

Background and Net Worth

According to reports, Isaacman's net worth is pegged at approximately $1.2bn, accumulated through his financial services firm and the divestment of his firm that provided flight training and managed a collection of military jets.

The NASA administrator role will be his initial foray in politics, a contrast to the immediate predecessors appointed as NASA chief.

He will take over from the former transportation secretary, who has served as temporary leader since July.
