Democrats Denounce Trump After He Claims They Should Face Execution
Lawmakers from the Democratic party demonstrated fury after the ex-president alleged a coalition of Democratic representatives of being "traitors" and stated they should be detained and punished "by death" following their release of a controversial video.
The Recording That Provoked the Dispute
The recorded message, shared on earlier this week, includes six Democratic congress members who in the past worked in armed forces or intelligence roles.
"Similar to us, you all took an vow to defend and defend this constitution," the lawmakers declared in the brief video. "Currently, the threats to our constitution don't only come from foreign nations, but from right here at home. Our regulations are clear, you can decline illegal orders, you can reject illegal orders, you have to reject unlawful commands. No one has to carry out directives that break the statutes or our founding principles."
The Former President's Angry Reply
The clip reportedly provoke a angry response from the previous commander-in-chief.
On the following morning, Trump wrote on his preferred platform: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our Nation should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In an additional publication, he wrote: "This represents really serious, and Harmful to our United States. Their comments cannot be enabled to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a third message, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also reposted a statement that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Democratic Officials Respond
Following Trump's remarks on that day, Top Democrats issued a unified declaration condemning the statements.
"Political violence has no place in America," they declared. "Representatives who were featured in the video all worked our nation with tremendous patriotism and distinction. We clearly denounce Donald Trump's appalling and risky threats of violence against members of Congress, and urge GOP representatives to forcefully do the same."
The party representatives also mentioned that they had been in communication with security officials "to ensure the security of these representatives and their families."
"Donald Trump must without delay remove these extreme online messages and withdraw his dangerous language before he gets someone killed," the statement stated.
Officials' Defiant Reaction
The lawmakers who appeared in the video also published a statement.
"We serve as former service members and defense specialists who care for this nation and made an oath to defend and uphold the founding document of the United States," they stated. "This commitment lasts a lifetime, and we intend to honor it. No intimidation, pressure, or promotion of aggression will stop us from that fundamental responsibility."
"The most revealing aspect is that the president deems it liable to punishment by execution for us to reiterate the legal requirements," they continued. "Our service members should know that we have their backs as they fulfill their oath to the national charter and duty to obey only legal commands. It is not only the proper thing to do, but also our obligation."
They stated: "The entire nation must come together and denounce the president's requests for our murder and ideological conflict. This is a time for principled stance."
Further Governmental Reactions
The Opposition leader also denounced Trump's statements and shared on social media: "It's important to understand: the ex-commander in chief is demanding the capital punishment of public representatives."
He stated: "This represents an outright THREAT. All senators, every Representative, the entire nation – irrespective of political affiliation – should denounce this right away and without qualification."
The GOP leader defended Trump's allegation that the Democrats had engaged in "rebellion", describing the video as "highly unsuitable", commenting: "It is very harmful, you have prominent officials of Congress instructing troops to disobey orders, I think that is historic in American history."
The Republican leader also allegedly informed media outlets that in what he read of Trump's messages, Trump was "explaining the offense of rebellion" but that "legal experts have to examine the terminology and establish all that."
White House Reaction
During a White House press conference on Thursday afternoon, when inquired by a media member, "Would the president want to put to death elected officials?", the administration spokesperson responded: "Certainly not."
"It's important to note about what the president is reacting to," the official declared. "There are sitting members of the American legislature who worked together to organize a digital communication to personnel of the national defense, to serving soldiers encouraging them to defy the president's proper directives."
She said: "The purity of our defense system relies on the hierarchy, and if that system is violated, it can lead to casualties, it can result in confusion, and that's what these congressional representatives ... are fundamentally encouraging."
