Ghostface OG Star Matthew Lillard Is Anxious He Could Ruin the Franchise with the Seventh Installment.
The highly anticipated slasher sequel Scream 7 is scheduled to debut in theaters next year, and it is gearing up for a major family reunion. This new chapter signals the legendary return of Neve Campbell as survivor Sidney Prescott, following her absence from the last entry. She will, per tradition, be alongside Courtney Cox as reporter Gail Weathers, but they aren't the only beloved characters making a comeback.
"Coming back to a role you played in your twenties when you're 55 was a daunting task that gave me sleepless nights," the actor admits.
A Triumphant Comeback for Fallon Favorites
Reports have confirmed that a trio of distinct characters from past films are slated to reappear in this latest sequel, even though dying in prior movies. The exact mechanism of their return remains a mystery. Fans should get ready for the return of the beloved and seemingly immortal cop Dewey Riley, the filmmaker and Scream 3 antagonist Roman Bridger, and a member of the original killer pair, Stu Macher.
The Weight of Legendary Status
For Matthew Lillard, reprising his role in the series for the first occasion since a small appearance is a dream come true, even if he is apprehensive about the audience response. The performer vividly recalls the precise instant he received the news from the series creator.
"I remember the conversation. I remember the pleasantries. I remember him posing the question. That instance is indelibly imprinted on my psyche," he states. "So I'm really proud to be back. I'm thrilled to be back."
Stu Macher has attained iconic status in the years since the original film premiered, which left Lillard feeling very nervous.
"Truthfully, that's a role that is infamous, like it or not," he explains. "A character that is now embodied in every single Scream mask that walks around every October 31st."
The Fear of Letting Down the Fans
Now that filming has concluded, Lillard is waiting like the rest of us to see the final product. He confesses to feeling immense pressure about hoping not to be the one who damages the popular series.
"The outcome is either a success and people are excited to have you, or it's a fail," Lillard points out. "At the start, I have no idea if the film will gonna work. I don't know if people want to see me. I've certainly seen plenty of people come out and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they going back to this idea?' So the reality is that I feel a lot of pressure to not mess up the series. I hope people exiting Scream 7 and saying, 'Well, that was terrible, and Matthew Lillard was the reason.'"
Theories and Excitement Abound
While many longtime fans are eagerly awaiting Stu's return, the big question of how he and the others come back persists. Perhaps they live as manifestations in Sidney's mind, similar to a prior storyline. Or, perhaps they are in some way all alive in a strange shared situation. The possibility of a self-referential story, inspired by classic horror movies, also is on the table.
Audiences will find out the truth when Scream 7 debuts in theaters.
