Larian Studios Announce a New Divinity, Calling it Their Biggest RPG to Date

The speculation about The Game Awards reached a fever pitch, especially after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a puzzling image of a desert monolith. The secret is finally answered. The acclaimed developer is creating a brand-new Divinity game.

Revealed to be Divinity, the game was showcased with a bold trailer that included striking imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the very opening of infernal gates.

A Different Direction

Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian warned that a third Original Sin game to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not currently in development.

However, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This phrasing hints that the team might be crafting a faster-paced experience as opposed to another tactical title. At this moment, we can only guess, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

The Legacy of Divinity

The Divinity series is universally respected and arguably it kicked off the modern wave of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for detailed worlds, branching plots, and flexible progression—qualities that recently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is classic fantasy, what truly sets Divinity apart is the immense freedom granted to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is full of niche playthroughs that are viable by choosing a specific type of character with a specific history of choices.

The series is also notoriously flexible, allowing players to improvise in narrative and gameplay. Most missions can be solved in multiple ways, often in lateral fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you heeded something a dog told you.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by moving environmental hazards in a unorthodox way.

More to Come

It is these creative systems that have cemented the series to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games ever made. Now, fans can look forward to another adventure in this legendary franchise.
