‘Oh How We Will Miss This Man’: Meg Ryan Shares Emotional Tribute to Director Rob Reiner
The actress Meg Ryan has shared a moving homage to the deceased filmmaker Rob Reiner, who was her director in the hit romantic comedy When Harry Met Sally.
A Tragic Discovery
Reiner was discovered deceased alongside his spouse, Michele Singer Reiner, at their home in Los Angeles at the weekend.
“Oh how we will miss this man…” Ryan shared on Instagram, next to an image of them together. “We thank you, Rob and Michele, for your belief in true love, fairy tales, and laughter. Your trust in people's goodness and your love for this nation are remembered.”
Legal Proceedings Unfold
Reiner’s son Nick, 32, has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder and appeared in court today. He’s being incarcerated with no bail set. Reports indicate that Reiner’s daughter Romy was the one who located her father.
“It is my belief that from this horror, positive change and understanding can emerge,” Ryan continued. “Perhaps they would desire a legacy of hope and humanity, leading us toward empathy and tranquility.”
Family Members Issue a Message
Reiner’s surviving children Jake and Romy released a message today. “No words can convey the constant, profound sorrow we feel,” they said. “Losing our parents in such a horrific way is a devastation beyond comprehension. They weren’t just our parents; they were our best friends.”
Peers Pay Their Respects
Ryan’s co-star, Billy Crystal, joined in remembering Reiner through a message shared yesterday together with remarks by Larry David, Martin Short and Albert Brooks.
“His skill for comedy was unmatched, his ear for dialogue perfect, and his dramatic precision was sheer elegance,” the tribute noted. “For the actors, he loved them. For the writers he made them better. His finest trait was granting creative liberty. He valued input and made you part of the team. They always felt they were working as a team. To be in his hands as a film-maker was a privilege but that is only part of his legacy.”
A Lasting Cinematic Legacy
When Harry Met Sally was a box office and critical triumph in 1989, earning over $93 million globally and securing Nora Ephron an Oscar nomination for best original screenplay.
Rob Reiner met Michele Singer Reiner whilst filming When Harry Met Sally. The pair were connected through Barry Sonnenfeld, a friend and director.
Reiner’s notable filmography comprised classics such as Misery, Stand by Me and The Princess Bride. The director and his wife were together in marriage for 36 years.
