The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Discloses He Has an Idea of How The Apple TV+ Show Will Conclude... Currently.
Vince Gilligan could not have predicted that his new science-fiction series would become a massive hit. “God bless the fans,” he states. “I was surprised by the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”
With the first season of the acclaimed sci-fi show reaching its finale—and a second season greenlit and underway—the creative team recently discussed the viewer reception and whether it will shape the narrative path of Pluribus.
On the Incredible Fan Response
Anyone might to get distracted by the rampant praise and online debates regarding Pluribus. The creator is doing his best to ignore the noise.
“The experience is akin to constantly eating hot fudge sundaes and being tickled to death,” he explains. “It's wonderful, but I learn of it from others, and that's by design. Never in my life searched for my own name online, nor do I ever want to. It's quite the opposite. It's a deep trap I know I would fall into and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from the hardware store and I'd be stuck in my living room.”
In spite of Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s it's impossible to ignore the immensely favorable response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it alter the course of the show.
“It is not our goal to tailor anything,” says Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not impacted by what people are saying.”
“We prefer to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan adds.
The Big Question: Does the showrunner Know the Finale of Pluribus?
So if the writers aren't taking cues by audience theories, does that mean they have already decided how Pluribus will finally conclude? Essentially yes… sort of.
“There are some compelling concepts about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan says. “yet we stand ready to throw out a solid concept for a better idea. This approach has served us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we conceive of something superior and I suspect we'll be doing that.”
Then again, if plans fall through, executive producer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to use as a backup.
“I constantly suggest that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and we're in there,” Smith jokes, “but no one is buying it.”
Of course, why mess with the classics?
“I want Carol to awaken next to Bob Newhart,” he jokes.
Pluribus can be watched on Apple TV+.
