Virginia's New Governor Establishes History as First Female State Leader

Over 250 years, Virginia has seen 74 governors, all of them men. Recently, Abigail Spanberger broke this glass ceiling by securing the position as the first female governor in Virginia's records.

A Campaign Focused On Cost-of-Living Issues and Targeted Opposition

Ex- US congresswoman and CIA case officer won with a election strategy that stressed everyday expenses and carefully targeted Trump-era measures as opposed to the person.

Beginnings and Academic Journey

Hailing from in a New Jersey town on August 7, 1979, she relocated to a suburb of Richmond, Virginia at thirteen. Her father was an army veteran who subsequently pursued a career in police work; her mother was a nurse and volunteer.

She enrolled in the UVA, receiving a diploma in French studies. Upon completing her studies, she had a short stint as a substitute teacher before pursuing a life of service.

“I grew up understanding that I wanted to walk the same path as my dad and I did,” Spanberger shared with supporters at a gathering in Norfolk, Virginia recently.

Public Service Career

At the federal agency, she investigated involving narcotics, abusers and money launderers. She served legal orders, frequently being the sole female on the operation squad. She then entered the CIA and specialized in counter-terrorism cases, working covertly and abroad.

Life Change

In that year, she and her spouse, an engineer, reached a career crossroads. Residing on the Pacific coast, they were considering another overseas assignment. They took out a world map and asked their eldest daughter, then in kindergarten, where they should go. the commonwealth, she replied, because “everyone we love lives in Virginia”.

Spanberger recalled at her rally: “And so we chose to pivot from a national duty, to service to community because she was correct. All our relatives are in Virginia.”

Political Beginnings

Back in her home state, she participated in an advocacy organization, which combats firearm incidents, and started a Girl Scout troop. In 2017, she resolved to run for Congress, which advisers told her was a “long shot” because the party hadn't had secured the seventh district in half a century.

“But I saw what the president was doing with his actions and how he was dividing communities. And I saw my representative repeatedly work against the healthcare law. And I realized I had to do something. So spoiler: I won.”

Centrist Approach

In Washington, she quickly became part of the centrist group, a alliance of moderate and budget-conscious Democrats. She prioritized specific policies: bringing broadband to the countryside, combating narcotics trade and veterans’ services.

She built a reputation for partnering with colleagues across the aisle and was often cited as the most bipartisan member of the Virginia delegation. She was outspoken about political rhetoric that she believed turned off centrists, warning her party against ideological slogans that could be weaponised in swing areas.

Centrist Group

Along with Congresswomen a former CIA analyst and an ex-navy pilot, she was labeled a part of the “mod squad” in opposition to the progressive “squad” of AOC.

Gubernatorial Campaign

In that autumn, she declared she would not seek re-election for a fourth term and would rather run for governor in the next election.

Her platform centred on ideas of public service, advocacy for education and infrastructure and protection of governing systems. Her federal service lent her credibility on national security issues and she described government work as a calling instead of a career.

Win Over Opponent

This enabled her to counter Republican opponent Winsome Earle-Sears’s criticisms on cultural issues, notably the claim that Spanberger is an radical on civil rights and transgender healthcare.

The governor-elect, who maintained that individual districts should determine whether transgender students can participate in school athletics, cast her opponent as the contender more misaligned with the mainstream of the commonwealth's citizens.
